The charity focuses its efforts on understanding dogs and sharing that knowledge with the wider public to prevent problem behaviours that can result in relinquishment or abandonment. It’s hard to believe she will turn 18 on 14 th August but we will make sure she enjoys being extra spoiled on her special day,” Andrew added.ĭogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for around 14,000 dogs across its network of 21 rehoming centres in the UK including the Darlington location. “Quite simply she has been a delight her entire life and we will be forever grateful to everyone at Dogs Trust for bringing Fern into our family. Even in her golden years, the 18-year-old is a labrador through and through, and if an opportunity arises to steal the cats' food - she is there. Not just loved by the humans in her home, she is even a friend to the family's five rescue cats and the six animals live extremely happily together. Fern is known to revert back to her youthful puppy ways when she sees the youngsters walk through the front door and she always ready to play with them despite her advancing age.

Even now at her more mature age, as soon as my grandchildren arrive, she awakes from a snooze, and is youthful and playful. She loved playing with our children, Amy and Daniel. The Blakemore family adopted Fern in 2004 where she joined Andrew, Fiona and their children Amy and Daniel, who were 10 and eight at the time.Īndrew Blakemore describes the 18-year-old pooch as their 'soulmate pupster' who is cherished by the whole family. Labrador Cross, Fern was just eight-weeks-old when she found her forever family when they visited the Darlington Dogs Trust rehoming centre in Sadberge. A much-loved rescue dog is celebrating her milestone 18th birthday after being adopted as a puppy.
